Dominican Republic advances sustainable refrigeration goals

The Dominican Republic is making progress toward sustainable refrigeration to protect the ozone layer and mitigate climate change. As an island nation vulnerable to climate effects, the country is prioritizing the transition to cleaner, more efficient technologies to support essential sectors such as food preservation, medicine, tourism, and healthcare.

Under the Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Elimination Plan, the Dominican Republic aims to reduce these substances by 98.5% by 2028. This initiative is led by the Dominican state with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Environment, funded by the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol. Current achievements include the establishment of six refrigerant recovery and recycling centers and the certification of approximately 420 technicians as environmental managers.
