Dominican Republic and Haiti coordinate bridge repairs amid border security expansion

Authorities from the Dominican Republic and Haiti are coordinating efforts to repair and maintain the binational bridge connecting Dajabón with Juana Méndez. Officials from both nations conducted a joint inspection of the structure to evaluate its condition and establish a collaborative framework for necessary repairs. Haitian Governor Daniel Germain emphasized that infrastructure maintenance is a shared responsibility essential for the movement of people, merchants, and goods.

Simultaneously, the Dominican Republic is expanding its border security infrastructure through the ‘Frontière Forte’ (Strong Border) program. A new 14.5-kilometer section of perimeter fencing is being constructed in the Hoya de Enriquillo area of the Independencia province. This section will stand 3.9 meters high and include six watchtowers and 35 culverts.

The Dominican Ministry of Defense stated that these security measures, which include solar lighting, fiber optic connections, and drone surveillance, aim to curb smuggling and illegal activities while facilitating safer, more orderly cross-border trade. Approximately 55 kilometers of fencing have already been erected along various points of the border.
