Dominican Republic and Haiti seek to normalize consular and security cooperation
Foreign ministers from the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Víctor Bisonó and Raina Forbin, met in Dajabón to discuss bilateral relations, focusing on border security, migration, trade, and air connectivity. A key outcome of the meeting was the expressed willingness of both nations to restore Dominican consular operations in Haiti as soon as security conditions allow for safe functioning.
During the discussions, the delegations emphasized the need for international support for the Gang Suppression Force (GSF). Haiti has formally requested the deployment of 5,500 GSF members and a mandate renewal from the UN Security Council to assist national forces in restoring order. This support is viewed as essential for stabilizing the country and ensuring the success of the presidential elections scheduled for December 13.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the ongoing management of the border. Recent data from the Dominican General Directorate of Migration indicates that 202,294 Haitians have been deported through the Dajabón control point since October 2024. Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation to combat illicit economies and improve border governance.
