Dominican Republic Attorney General warns of prison terms under new Penal Code

Dominican Republic Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso has warned that driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a death can result in up to 20 years in prison under the country’s new Penal Code.

Speaking at a conference in Tamboril, Reynoso addressed the legal implications of various behaviors. She noted that the new code updates legislation dating back to 1884, introducing new criminal categories and establishing maximum prison sentences of up to 60 years for certain offenses.

Additionally, Reynoso cautioned against firing firearms into the air. She explained that if such actions result in injury or death, the act may be classified as homicide with eventual intent rather than involuntary manslaughter. The Attorney General also addressed digital crimes, warning that false social media accounts do not guarantee anonymity for those engaging in defamation or attacks on personal reputations.
