Dominican Republic begins 14.5-km border fence construction in Jimaní
The Dominican Republic has commenced the second phase of its border perimeter fence project in Jimaní, Independencia province. This 14.5-kilometer construction effort, overseen by the Ministry of Defense, is a key component of the 'Frontera Fuerte' (Strong Border) strategy initiated by President Luis Abinader to enhance national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The new infrastructure is strategically located in the Hoya de Enriquillo region, facing Lake Azuéi. This area has historically been a challenge for authorities due to irregular smuggling and illicit activities. The project includes a 13-foot-high fence, six surveillance towers, 35 culverts, and a dual-patrol road network with a combined width of seven meters on both sides of the structure to facilitate rapid military response.
In addition to the physical barrier, the government is implementing integrated surveillance through technology and increased military presence. The Army and the Specialized Land Border Security Corps (Cesfront) are actively monitoring the sector to combat contraband and ensure organized commercial exchange at the Jimaní border crossing.
