Dominican Republic expands micro‑enterprise support with loans and revised waste law
The Dominican government, through the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MIPYMES and the National Council for Promotion and Support of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Promipyme), has disbursed more than RD$927 million in micro‑enterprise credits this year. Recent allocations include RD$160 million to 426 entrepreneurs in the Capotillo district of Santo Domingo and RD$100 million to 400 entrepreneurs in Río San Juan. Since Promipyme’s inception, it has lent a total of RD$19.8 billion, with roughly 54‑64 % of those loans granted to women‑led businesses.
In parallel, President Luis Abinader signed Law 36‑26, amending the General Law on Integrated Solid Waste Management. The reform introduces a graduated contribution schedule for MIPYMES, replacing a flat RD$675,000 fee, and exempts non‑profit associations. The changes aim to ease the fiscal burden on small firms and support the reopening of egg exports to Cuba.
Both measures are presented as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the Dominican micro‑enterprise sector, promote gender inclusion, and sustain economic growth.
