Dominican Republic Chamber of Deputies to reduce seats for 2028

Following a constitutional reform in October 2024, the Dominican Republic's Chamber of Deputies will be reduced from 190 to 170 members starting with the 2028 elections. The new composition will consist of 158 territorial deputies, five national deputies based on vote accumulation, and seven representatives for the Dominican community living abroad.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) is responsible for distributing the territorial seats according to the Constitution, which mandates that no province has fewer than two deputies. The redistribution will use the May 2024 congressional election registry as a reference.

While the reduction is framed as a way to rationalize the state and reduce costs, concerns have been raised regarding the potential weakening of political plurality. There is a risk that minority parties and emerging political forces may face greater difficulty securing positions in Congress due to the decreased number of available seats in certain constituencies.
