Dominican Republic closes illegal crossing in Punta Cana, expands road safety measures

The Dominican Republic's road authority, RD Vial, permanently closed an improvised crossing on Avenida Estados Unidos near the Friusa community in the Verón‑Punta Cana area. The unregistered access had been used daily by motorcycles and vehicles to bypass official return lanes, creating hazardous maneuvers on the busy Frank Rainieri Tourist Boulevard. After repeated warnings from local media, brigades intervened and removed the illegal passage to improve traffic safety.

In the municipality of Sabana Yegua, the Directorate General of Traffic Safety (DIGESETT), together with the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, the National Institute of Transit, and the local mayor’s office, installed speed‑reduction devices and new vertical and horizontal road markings. The measures aim to address a history of traffic accidents in the area and reflect a broader governmental strategy to enhance road safety nationwide.
