Dominican Republic: Political shifts and commemorations
The Dominican Republic is experiencing significant political movement as major parties reorganize ahead of the 2028 elections. Leonel Fernández, president of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), has led a wave of new members joining his party in Santiago, including several former leaders from the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). Fernández has used these appearances to criticize the current administration of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM), labeling it “medularmente ineficiente” (fundamentally inefficient), specifically citing repeated delays in the inauguration of the Santiago monorriel.
Simultaneously, the PLD is conducting large-scale reorganizations. In Puerto Plata, former president Danilo Medina led a mass assembly that saw the swearing-in of over 4,000 new and returning members. During these events, Medina highlighted the party’s social legacy and suggested Walter Musa as a potential senatorial candidate for 2028.
In a separate cultural and political context, the nation is marking the 25th anniversary of the death of Juan Bosch, the former president, writer, and founder of the PLD. Various organizations, including the Fundación Juan Bosch, held ceremonies in La Vega and Puerto Plata to honor his literary and democratic legacy, emphasizing his impact on the country’s institutional history.
