Dominican Republic enhances emergency response and health resilience

The Dominican Republic has undertaken several initiatives to strengthen its national emergency response and public health resilience. A major component was the 2026 National Earthquake Evacuation Drill, which mobilized over 3.3 million people across 32 provinces. The exercise successfully tested the 'Alerta RD' Cell Broadcast system, reaching 6.1 million users with 99% effectiveness, and delivered over 2.7 million SMS messages.

To enhance technical capabilities, the government is integrating the F1RVLA1S robotic platform, based on Boston Dynamics' Spot, into the 9-1-1 emergency system to assist in high-risk scenarios such as structural collapses. Additionally, the National Health Service (SNS) has intensified supervision of maternal and neonatal services in public hospitals to reduce mortality rates.

On a regional level, the Inter-American Development Bank is hosting a dialogue in Santo Domingo to address health system resilience against climate change and seismic threats in Latin America and the Caribbean. Complementing these efforts, Banco Popular Dominicano donated two International 4300 fire trucks, valued at approximately US$189,540, to the La Guáyiga district to bolster local fire response capabilities.
