Dominican Republic Congress considers new provinces and municipalities

The Dominican Republic Congress is considering numerous legislative initiatives to restructure the country's territorial organization. According to the Chamber of Deputies Legislative Information System, dozens of proposals are currently under review to create new provinces and elevate existing municipal districts to municipality status.

At least 26 initiatives aim to transform various communities into municipalities across several provinces, including Santiago, Santo Domingo, La Altagracia, and Montecristi. Specific proposals for new municipalities include Santiago Oeste, Hato del Yaque, and Gurabo in Santiago, as well as La Guáyiga, San Luis, Pantoja, Los Botados, and Guaricano in Santo Domingo. Other areas mentioned include Verón-Punta Cana in La Altagracia and El Palmar in Bahoruco.

Additionally, the proposals include the creation of new provinces, with names such as Santa Lucía, Matías Ramón Mella, Villa Riva, and Río Haina being considered. These legislative projects seek to change the administrative organization of communities that currently belong to other jurisdictions. As of now, these remain legislative proposals and have not yet been approved or implemented.
