Dominican Congress investigates nepotism after payroll report

An investigation has revealed that 65 relatives of 59 legislators are currently on the payrolls of the Dominican Republic's National Congress. The findings indicate that approximately one in four deputies has a family member employed within the legislative branches, with roles ranging from legislative assistants to drivers and messengers.

These family members, comprising 53 deputies and six senators, receive a combined monthly salary of approximately RD$2.7 million. The report highlights a culture of nepotism facilitated by a regulatory vacuum, as current laws do not expressly prohibit such hirings.

In response to the findings, Senate President Ricardo de los Santos stated that the situation is under review and being discussed, though he did not specify what measures might be taken. Meanwhile, Chamber of Deputies President Alfredo Pacheco declined to comment on the matter.
