Dominican Republic wins US$100M arbitration and receives court ruling on police records
The Dominican Republic has secured a major victory in an international arbitration case, avoiding a payment of over US$100 million (approximately RD$5,882 million) to Yves Martine Garnier. The Arbitral Tribunal dismissed all claims related to the termination of a waste management concession contract with EGTT Dominicana, S. A. in Santo Domingo Este, ruling that the termination was valid due to service deficiencies.
Separately, the Constitutional Court ruled that police intelligence records must lose their classified status and be transferred to historical archives after 10 years, in accordance with Decree 122-07. This decision follows a habeas data action regarding a 2011 investigation that remained active despite the expiration of the legal timeframe.
In other developments, the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic has denounced a media pressure campaign by the Mendes Junior-Méndez Cabral Consortium regarding a US$5 million claim that is currently being appealed before the Supreme Court of Justice. Additionally, traffic data from 2025 shows that helmet violations significantly outnumber seatbelt infractions in the country.
