Latin American courts issue various sentences for homicide and fraud
Various judicial proceedings across Latin America have resulted in significant sentences for violent crimes and corporate misconduct. In Chile, the Court of Appeals of Antofagasta upheld a 10-year sentence for Yancarlos Mejía Valencia for a frustrated homicide in Calama. Additionally, Santiago courts ordered preventive detention for Michael Clark, former president of Azul Azul, and several others involved in the Sartor case, which includes charges of fraud, money laundering, and unfair administration.
In Argentina, several convictions were issued, including a 17-year sentence for former police officers in Quilmes involved in a narcotics theft ring, and a 2-year sentence for individuals involved in a robbery in Salta. In the Dominican Republic, Euris Yessiel Báez was sentenced to 30 years for the 2022 murder of former police captain Cantalicio Valdez Vallejo.
Other notable rulings include a 10-year sentence for an extortionist in Chihuahua, Mexico, who impersonated a gang member, and a 1-year preventive detention for a swimming instructor in Guadalajara, Mexico, accused of child abuse. In Colombia, a court confirmed an 18-year sentence for an ex-patrolman convicted of homicide, though authorities are still seeking his capture.
