Dominican Republic marks Restoration anniversary amid military reshuffle

The Dominican Republic is commemorating the 163rd anniversary of the Restoration War, a pivotal historical event marking the nation's struggle to regain sovereignty from Spanish annexation. President Luis Abinader has honored the legacy of the movement's heroes, emphasizing the importance of national sovereignty for current and future generations.

Amid these commemorations, President Abinader has issued Decree 557-26, implementing significant leadership changes within the military. Major General Jimmy Arias Grullón has been appointed Commander General of the Army, while Major General Enmanuel Marcelino Souffront Tamayo has been named Commander General of the Air Force. Other high-level appointments include new roles for the Inspector General of the Armed Forces and the Presidential Security Corps (Cusep).

Politically, the administration faces scrutiny as it reaches the midpoint of Abinader's second term. While the government reports macroeconomic stability and economic growth, opposition leaders from parties such as the PRD and Fuerza del Pueblo have criticized the administration. Critics point to rising costs of living, public service deficiencies in energy and education, and concerns regarding external debt and corruption, arguing that macroeconomic indicators have not sufficiently improved the daily lives of citizens.
