Maternidad La Altagracia investigated after 17 newborn deaths

The Chamber of Deputies Health Commission visited the Maternidad Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia hospital to investigate the deaths of 17 newborns that occurred in August. The visit aimed to gather precise information and produce a detailed report to clarify the circumstances surrounding these fatalities.

Hospital director Henry Amín Mesa stated that of the 17 neonatal deaths, only three were associated with infections in extremely premature infants. He identified other causes including two cases of gastroschisis (a congenital malformation), one reintervened premature infant, one newborn with a single ventricle condition, and eleven other deaths unrelated to infections. Amín maintained that the hospital remains a reliable facility with quality services.

Legislative commission president Diómedes Rojas noted that at least six of the babies were born alive but faced complications due to extreme prematurity between 25 and 27 weeks. While the hospital administration asserts clarity regarding the causes, various medical organizations have called for an independent investigation, suspecting the presence of infections within the facility.
