Dominican Republic implements vehicle tax increases and fuel subsidies
The Dominican Republic government has announced several economic measures affecting citizens. The Directorate General of Internal Taxes (DGII) has implemented new rates for the Vehicle Circulation Tax (marbete) for the 2026-2027 period. Vehicles manufactured up to 2021 will pay RD$2,000, while those manufactured from 2022 onwards will pay RD$4,000. This represents an increase of RD$500 and RD$1,000 respectively compared to previous rates, which had not been updated since 2016. The renewal period runs from October 29, 2026, to January 31, 2027.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and SMEs (MICM) announced that fuel prices for major products will remain frozen for the week of October 31 to November 6, 2026. The government is providing RD$1,516.5 million in subsidies to prevent international price hikes from affecting local consumers. This includes maintaining the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (GLP) at RD$135.20 per gallon, with the state covering approximately 45% of its real market cost.
These measures have drawn criticism from opposition groups and transport organizations. The Fuerza del Pueblo party and the National Confederation of Transport Organizations (Conatra) have expressed concerns regarding the impact on workers' purchasing power and the disproportionate burden on public transport providers.
