Dominican Republic economy grows 4.6 percent amid household cost pressures
The Dominican Republic's economy grew by 4.6 percent between January and September 2026, according to data from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD). Growth was primarily driven by the construction sector, which expanded by 8.2 percent, and financial services, which rose by 7.8 percent. Other notable sectors included hotels, bars, and restaurants, which grew by 5.6 percent, and mining and quarries at 5.2 percent.
Despite these macroeconomic gains, households face significant financial pressure due to the rising costs of essential goods and services. Concerns include food prices, electricity tariffs, rent, and medication. While the labor market saw the employed population reach over 5.2 million people in the second quarter, analysts note that wage growth has not kept pace with the rising cost of living.
International indicators remain strong, with tourism revenues reaching 9.7 billion dollars and exports totaling 13.2 billion dollars through September. Foreign direct investment stood at approximately 4.5 billion dollars during the same period.
