Dominican Republic electoral reforms and new ID center

The political party Opción Democrática has submitted a proposal to the Junta Central Electoral (JCE) to restructure electoral districts in the Dominican Republic. Party president José Horacio Rodríguez requested the elimination of small constituencies in favor of single demarcations in provinces that currently hold multiple districts. This proposal aims to address the upcoming reduction of the Chamber of Deputies from 190 to 170 seats scheduled for 2028, seeking to prevent further fragmentation of provinces.

Separately, the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) and the JCE have inaugurated a new center for biometric data capture and immediate issuance of national identity cards. Located at the UASD campus, the facility utilizes advanced technology, including optical fingerprint scanners and cryptographic chip encoders, to serve over 100,000 students and the surrounding community. JCE President Román Jáquez Liranzo described the facility as one of the largest in the country dedicated to these services.
