Dominican Republic expands diaspora outreach at New York INDEX event
The Institute of Dominicans in the Exterior (INDEX) together with financial service partners Vimenca and Western Union held a large meeting with the Dominican community in the New York tri‑state area on Wednesday at the Mamajuana restaurant in Inwood, Manhattan.
INDEX vice‑minister for Dominican communities abroad and executive director Celinés Toribio said the event reaffirmed President Luis Abinader’s commitment to maintain close, participatory management with the diaspora. She announced the opening of INDEX’s 15th office in Toronto, Canada, to bring state services to a fast‑growing community.
Representatives from Vimenca and Western Union presented remittance and financial solutions, while José Iván Taveras of Apartamentos RD highlighted real‑estate investment opportunities in the Dominican Republic. The gathering also introduced the Oscar de la Renta Award, an INDEX initiative to recognize Dominican talent abroad.
Attendees praised the forum for allowing direct dialogue and Toribio pledged further training, leadership and entrepreneurship programs for Dominicans living overseas.
