Dominican Republic expands subsidized food market network

The Dominican government announced an expansion of its subsidized food program, maintaining a nationwide network of producer markets and mobile warehouses. The National Price Stabilization Institute (Inespre) reports operating 53 producer markets and 171 mobile warehouses that sell staple items such as rice, chicken, oil, plantains, onions, garlic, salami, vegetables, and canned goods at prices below the regular market.

Markets were active on Saturday across multiple provinces, including Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Juan, Azua, La Vega, Puerto Plata, Barahona, San Francisco de Macorís, La Romana, Higüey and Dajabón. Inespre also deployed 10 mobile warehouses inside correctional centers to broaden access to essential foods for incarcerated populations. The initiative aims to strengthen food security, ease the cost‑of‑living pressure on low‑income families, and stabilize household budgets.
