Heat wave in Dominican Republic spurs hydration advice amid Sahara dust
The Dominican Republic is experiencing a heat wave as Saharan dust spreads over the country. Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 31 °C to 33 °C with lows around 23 °C to 25 °C, especially in Punta Cana, La Altagracia and other regions. The weather will be mostly stable, though brief showers, isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds are possible later in the day.
Authorities from the Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología advise people to stay well‑hydrated, wear light, bright‑coloured clothing and limit exposure to the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Recommended drinks include lemonade, coconut water, green vegetable juices, fruit smoothies and the local “morir soñando” mix of orange juice, ice and milk, all aimed at replenishing fluids and electrolytes.
Mariners are also warned to follow guidance on wind and wave conditions along the coasts.
