Dominican Republic officials urge urgent seismic prevention measures

Authorities and political leaders in the Dominican Republic are calling for urgent national seismic prevention policies due to the country's high vulnerability to earthquakes. The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), led by spokesperson Temístocles Montás, has urged the government and private sector to treat seismic resilience as a matter of national security. The party emphasized that the nation sits on several active geological faults and highlighted the need for a National Critical Infrastructure Inventory to protect hospitals, schools, and utility networks.

Complementing these political calls, Colonel José Vicente Peña of the National District Fire Department has advised citizens on immediate preparedness. He noted that the island contains 14 active faults and recommended that families establish emergency plans and maintain 72-hour supply kits. He also advised inspecting buildings for structural weaknesses like cracks or exposed rebar.

Separately, meteorological monitoring is active in the region as a tropical disturbance in the Atlantic is being watched for potential development into a tropical storm. Current projections suggest it may arrive in the Caribbean as a tropical wave, which could bring significant rainfall and flooding to the Dominican Republic.
