Dominican Republic firearm licensing requirements and costs

In the Dominican Republic, obtaining a first-time license for the possession or carrying of firearms involves a series of mandatory requirements and official fees. The Ministry of Interior and Police (MIP) oversees the process, which includes official payments starting at RD$11,770 for pistols and revolvers. This amount does not include the cost of the weapon itself or additional expenses for required documentation and evaluations.

Applicants must be at least 30 years old and must pass evaluations regarding drug use, alcohol consumption, and mental health. They must also demonstrate proficiency in handling a firearm and provide justification for the necessity of the license. The law distinguishes between possession, which allows keeping a weapon under legal terms, and carrying, which allows the individual to have the weapon on their person under specific conditions.

Certain legal conditions disqualify individuals from receiving authorization, such as active arrest warrants, domestic violence restrictions, or restraining orders. Identification requirements include the national ID card for Dominican citizens and appropriate migratory documentation for foreign nationals.
