Dominican and Ecuadorian legislatures advance key reform bills
In the Dominican Republic, the National Congress has formed a bicameral commission to study the organic law project for the National Police. This commission, led by Senator Franklin Romero, aims to analyze and debate the legislative initiative to establish the legal framework for the institution's structure and functions. This follows the expiration of previous versions of the reform in the last legislature. Additionally, the Dominican Senate held a training session for its staff on Dominican social constitutionalism, led by jurist Hermógenes Acosta de los Santos, to strengthen knowledge regarding fundamental rights.
In Ecuador, the National Assembly is advancing several legislative priorities. This includes the first debate on a bill to recognize the legal validity of digital identity cards, ensuring they carry the same weight as physical documents. The Assembly is also prioritizing an ‘Anti-Mafia Law,’ reforms to the Organic Integral Penal Code (COIP), and updates to the judicial and monetary codes, with a goal to approve 34 regulations by May 2027.
