Dominican Republic health authorities warn against processed foods
The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Public Health has issued warnings regarding the risks of excessive consumption of salt, saturated fats, and processed foods. Authorities noted that these dietary habits can lead to weight gain, which increases the burden on the heart and blood vessels, potentially resulting in high blood pressure.
To prevent chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, the Ministry recommends a diet rich in vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates, alongside adequate water intake. Other lifestyle factors cited as negative contributors to health include physical inactivity, alcohol and tobacco use, and chronic stress. The Ministry also emphasized the importance of sufficient sleep and mental health care.
In separate epidemiological updates, health officials reported two new cases of dengue, bringing the cumulative total to 224 cases. Malaria cases remain stable with no new reports this week, showing an 82% reduction compared to the same period last year. Additionally, two new cases of leptospirosis were confirmed, bringing the yearly total to 260, while cholera remains at zero reports.
