Dominican Republic health insurance expands to cover medical breast reduction

The Dominican Republic's Seguro Familiar de Salud (SFS) now includes breast‑reduction surgery when performed for medical reasons rather than purely aesthetic purposes. Under Resolution No. 624‑02 issued by the Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Social (CNSS), procedures addressing gigantomastia, symptomatic breast hypertrophy and gynecomastia are eligible if patients meet established medical criteria.

Plastic surgeon Emmanuel Pérez explained that eligibility hinges on documented health impacts such as chronic back, neck or shoulder pain, posture problems, skin lesions or limited daily activity. Each case must undergo an individual clinical evaluation and be supported by appropriate medical documentation; coverage does not guarantee automatic access. The policy aims to improve health outcomes and quality of life for patients whose condition exceeds cosmetic concerns.
