Dominican Republic mining exports surge 52.8% to over US$2 billion
The Dominican Republic is experiencing significant shifts in its economic and energy sectors. The mining industry has seen substantial growth, with exports reaching US$2,047 million between January and July 2026, a 52.8% year-on-year increase. Minister of Energy and Mines Joel Santos emphasized a strategic move toward value-added processing rather than mere extraction. A key focus is the exploration of rare earth elements, particularly in Pedernales, with resource determination expected by November to confirm potential reserves essential for global technology and the energy transition.
In the energy sector, the government is managing fluctuating international oil prices, which have remained above US$100 per barrel. While the 90-day freeze on fuel prices has ended, the government continues to provide significant subsidies—exceeding RD$33,807 million so far in 2026—to mitigate costs for consumers. Consequently, while LPG and natural gas prices remain stable, premium gasoline and optimal diesel have seen increases. To reduce long-term vulnerability to international market volatility, the country is diversifying its energy matrix, with renewable energy now accounting for over 25% of the supply.
Additionally, the cocoa sector is adapting to new European Union environmental regulations through geographic mapping to ensure traceability and prevent deforestation. In the logistics sector, Glotrans marked 20 years of operation, highlighting the country's growing role as a regional distribution hub.
