Dominican Republic: Historical analysis of the post-Trujillo era
Antoliano Peralta Romero has released a new historical work titled ‘Después de Trujillo: Un lustro convulso, 1961-1966’, which examines the turbulent five-year period in the Dominican Republic following the end of the Trujillo dictatorship.
The book analyzes the intense political and institutional transformations occurring between 1961 and 1966, including the 1962 elections, the presidency of Juan Bosch, the 1963 coup d'état, the establishment of the Triumvirate, the April 1965 Revolution, and the subsequent United States intervention. Peralta utilizes a legal perspective to explore the struggles over state organization, constitutional conflicts, and the legitimacy of authority during this era.
Separately, reflections on the Dominican Republic's stability highlight the nation's forty-year transformation characterized by democratic alternation, economic growth, and poverty reduction. While the country is noted as a regional reference for stability, concerns remain regarding the need to protect institutions from being used by privileged sectors and ensuring that capitalist growth maintains a human dimension.
