Dominican Republic hit by Sahara dust plume, causing heat and hazy skies

A third Saharan dust cloud has reached the Dominican Republic, bringing a dense, hazy layer that will linger through Thursday. The plume is expected to raise temperatures, reduce visibility and trigger a surge in respiratory, ocular and skin allergies.

Rainfall will be limited as the dust suppresses cloud development, though isolated showers are forecast for parts of the Cibao region and the capital area. Health officials advise staying hydrated, wearing light clothing and limiting outdoor exposure, especially for people with asthma or other chronic respiratory conditions.

The dust is associated with an anticyclonic high-pressure system and easterly‑southeasterly winds from the Caribbean. By Friday, a new tropical wave is expected to arrive, which should clear the dust and bring the potential for heavier rain and possible flooding.
