Dominican Republic inactive bank accounts reach RD$12,591.2 million

In the Dominican Republic, inactive and abandoned bank accounts accumulated RD$12,591.2 million as of August 2026, according to data from the Superintendencia de Bancos (SB).

An account is classified as inactive after three years without deposits or withdrawals. During this time, the funds continue to earn interest, but financial institutions must stop charging commissions. To reactivate or cancel such accounts, holders must contact their respective banks.

If an account remains without movement for ten years, it is considered abandoned, and funds may be transferred to the Central Bank, where they cease to generate interest. To claim these funds, individuals must contact the Treasury Department of the Central Bank to request an appointment.

Heirs can also claim funds from deceased relatives by requesting a free Financial Information Consultation through ProUsuario. Required documentation typically includes death certificates, birth certificates of heirs, marriage certificates where applicable, and copies of identification cards.
