Costa Rica to implement full vehicle property tax for electric vehicles in 2027

Costa Rican Ministry of Finance officials have announced that for the 2027 period, approximately 37,906 electric vehicles will be required to pay 100% of the vehicle property tax. This marks the end of temporary and gradual tax exemptions previously granted under Law No. 9518 to promote electric transport.

According to Vice Minister of Revenue Víctor Julio Carvajal Porras, the total vehicle fleet subject to taxation will consist of 3,374,092 units, including automobiles, aircraft, and vessels. While 56% of the registered fleet will maintain their current tax amounts and 42% will pay less due to depreciation tables, the inclusion of electric vehicles is expected to increase total revenue by approximately 8 billion colones compared to the previous period.

Property tax calculations for vehicles under 15 years old will follow a depreciation table based on the model, while older vehicles will maintain a fixed amount. Owners can consult their obligations through the Hacienda website's self-management services.
