Dominican Republic investigates ammunition found with Haitian gangs

A United Nations report has revealed that ammunition linked to Dominican military and police stockpiles has been found in the possession of Haitian criminal gangs, including the 400 Mawozo group. The findings have sparked intense political debate in the Dominican Republic, with some legislators characterizing the potential diversion of materials as “traición a la patria” (treason to the homeland).

Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor Ito Bisonó stated that some of the identified .50 caliber ammunition is over 50 years old, which complicates efforts to trace its exact movement. While the UN report documented specific instances—such as 41 cartridges with markings associated with the Dominican Army or National Police—officials noted that these findings do not independently prove how or by whom the materials were diverted.

The Dominican Ministry of Defense is investigating the matter and has highlighted previous enforcement actions, including the December 2025 arrest of an Army second lieutenant in San Juan for the irregular transport of 1,516 cartridges. Authorities continue to work with international bodies to clarify the circumstances under which these munitions reached Haitian territory.
