Junta Central Electoral removes identity card renewal restrictions
The Junta Central Electoral (JCE) has announced that, starting Friday, August 28, citizens in the Dominican Republic can renew their identity and electoral cards without restrictions. This change eliminates the previous requirement where renewals were organized based on the citizen's month of birth.
The announcement was made by JCE President Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo during a ceremony celebrating a major milestone: the issuance of the three millionth new identity card to Onaney Rosmel Severino Alcántara. According to official data, 3,066,520 people have already received the new document, representing approximately 35.8% of the 8,569,272 voters on the electoral roll. When including the 164,970 documents currently ready for delivery, the total progress reaches 37.7% of the electorate.
Authorities have warned that the old format of the identity card will lose its validity on April 1, 2027, after which the new document will be mandatory for all official procedures. Failure to renew could result in civil disability. The new card features advanced security measures, including high-resistance polycarbonate, laser technology, and a cryptographic chip. The JCE has urged the remaining 5.3 million citizens to complete the process promptly to avoid last-minute delays.
