Dominican Republic judicial leadership and standardization debates
In the Dominican Republic, discussions regarding the leadership and operational standards of the judiciary are underway. The civil society organization Participación Ciudadana has called for the upcoming election of the President of the Supreme Court of Justice to prioritize merit, judicial independence, and the career trajectory of judges. Coordinator Leidy Blanco García emphasized that the selection process should avoid political influence and provide greater visibility for women, who comprise 67% of the judicial workforce.
Separately, Supreme Court Minister Víctor Ríos has advocated for standardized judicial practices through dialogue with magistrates across different jurisdictions. Ríos highlighted the importance of establishing clear institutional stances to resolve controversies, specifically regarding the legitimacy of legal filings and the representation of interests in both civil and criminal proceedings. He warned that opening disciplinary inquiries prematurely could lead to the stigmatization of judicial officials.
