Dominican Republic keeps fuel prices high despite regional cuts

In the Dominican Republic, the premium gasoline price stayed at RD$341 per gallon (about US$5.86), above the regional average of US$5.41. While six Latin American and Caribbean nations lowered fuel prices after the recent drop in international oil prices, the Dominican government maintained frozen prices through subsidies, allocating more than RD$20 billion to offset consumer price changes.

Opposition leader Juan Hubieres of the Movimiento Rebelde claimed that liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is sold with a surcharge of RD$37.11 per gallon, generating over RD$350 million in extra revenue each week. He argued that discrepancies in gasoline, diesel and LPG pricing could produce as much as RD$780 million in additional weekly income for the state and called for transparency in the price‑setting methodology.
