Dominican Republic labor informality reaches 54.2%

Informal labor represents a significant portion of the Dominican Republic's workforce. According to data from the Central Bank, between April 2025 and March 2026, the average rate of labor informality stood at 54.2% of the employed population, based on the Continuous National Labor Force Survey.

This informal sector encompasses a wide variety of occupations that operate outside traditional payroll structures. Common roles include street vendors, motoconchistas (motorcycle taxi drivers), small merchants, plumbers, electricians, artisans, and various service workers. These individuals earn income directly from customers rather than receiving a fixed periodic salary from an employer.
