Dominican Republic launches electronic passport rollout in US

The Dominican Republic has begun the international rollout of its new electronic passport, starting with residents in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. This initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex) and the General Directorate of Passports (DGP), allows the diaspora to renew or obtain the document through local consulates without traveling to the Dominican Republic.

The new passport features an electronic chip and includes over 130 security measures to protect identity. A significant new benefit for holders is an automatic repatriation service in the event of death abroad. This coverage provides up to US$9,000 (approximately 585,000 Dominican pesos) to cover legal, logistical, and transport costs for returning remains to the Dominican Republic.

The repatriation coverage activates 48 hours after the passport is issued, though a six-month waiting period applies if the death is due to illness. In the event of a death, families must contact Seguros Reservas to coordinate the service. Authorities stated that the rollout will continue in a gradual and organized manner to other Dominican consulates worldwide.
