Dominican Republic launches fifth National Debate Championship
The Ministry of Education opened the V Campeonato Nacional de Debate, bringing together 78 teams and 234 secondary‑school students from the country’s 18 educational regions. The tournament, held at the Colegio Calasanz and overseen by 125 judges, is part of the Programa de Liderazgo Estudiantil de la República Dominicana (PLE‑RD).
Vice‑minister Ancell Scheker highlighted the event as a ministry initiative to develop students’ communication, critical thinking, argumentation and leadership skills, noting that participants may later represent the Dominican Republic in international debate competitions. Education minister Luis Miguel De Camps echoed this, stressing that school debate equips young people to think critically, engage respectfully in democratic dialogue and assume responsibility in society. More than 3,000 students competed in regional tournaments earlier in the year, with the 234 finalists now contesting the national stage.
