Education systems in Uruguay and Dominican Republic face infrastructure and budget debates

As the 2026-2027 school year approaches, educational systems in Uruguay and the Dominican Republic are addressing infrastructure and budgetary challenges. In Uruguay, the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP) and the National Development Corporation (CND) signed an agreement to construct 50 educational and sports centers through public-private partnerships, representing an investment of approximately $88 million. The first phase of 22 centers is expected to be completed by 2028.

In the Dominican Republic, the start of the school year faces scrutiny regarding resource allocation and inclusivity. The Fuerza del Pueblo party has criticized the Ministry of Education's budget, noting that while over RD$332 billion is allocated, approximately 93.25% is spent on current expenses, leaving only 6.75% for capital investments such as infrastructure and technology. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of specialized support for neurodivergent students and the implementation of Law 34-23 regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder.

On a local level, the Dominican government reported the construction of 35 new classrooms and the rehabilitation of 31 schools in the Valverde province. Meanwhile, the National District Mayor's Office is running a program to exchange plastic bottles for school supplies and electronic tablets to assist residents.
