Dominican Republic confronts ethical decline after L&R Comercial store looting amid fire

A fire broke out at the L&R Comercial appliance store on the Las Américas highway in the Dominican Republic. While the blaze was being fought, a group of individuals looted merchandise from the burning premises. Seventeen people were arrested for the theft. Because the incident occurred before the new penal code took effect, the suspects face up to two years in prison under the previous code, which sets lower penalties for exploiting emergencies.

Sociologist Celedonio Jiménez, speaking on the television program El Día, said the looting reflects a broader deterioration of ethical values in Dominican society. He linked the behavior to deep economic inequality, a lack of consistent consequences, and poor examples set by various social leaders. Jiménez emphasized that the problem is transversal, affecting families, institutions, and the public sphere, and called for a renewed focus on values education to address rising violence, corruption, and other social ills.
