Dominican Republic man arrested to serve remaining prison sentence

Cándido Fausto Félix Abreu Corona, 75, has been arrested in La Vega by the Public Ministry's Fugitive Capture Unit (Ucaprec) after a court rejected his request to remain out of prison for health reasons.

Abreu Corona was previously convicted for hiring an individual to attack his former partner with a corrosive substance in Santiago province. While originally sentenced to 30 years in 2021, an appeals court later modified the sentence to 20 years for his role as an accomplice.

The Court of Sentence Execution of the La Vega Judicial Department, presided over by Judge Manuel Ramón González Espinal, denied the defense's request for continued release based on medical grounds. Although the court acknowledged the defendant's oncological condition, it determined the evidence did not prove a terminal illness or a condition incompatible with imprisonment.

He must now serve the remaining 12 years, seven months, and 16 days of his sentence at the La Concepción public prison, with a scheduled release date of April 25, 2039.
