Dominican Republic celebrates 182nd anniversary of first Constitution
The Dominican Republic is commemorating the 182nd anniversary of the proclamation of its first Constitution, which was signed in San Cristóbal on November 6, 1844. The historical milestone follows the nation's independence from Haiti in February of that year.
Vice President Raquel Peña led official commemorative activities in San Cristóbal, presiding over a civic-military parade featuring students, the Armed Forces, and the National Police. The celebrations included a solemn hearing by the Constitutional Court, where magistrates emphasized the importance of effective legal guarantees to protect fundamental rights.
Since its inception, the Dominican Constitution has undergone 40 reforms. Historical discussions surrounding the original text highlighted tensions between proponents of civilian rule and military leaders like Pedro Santana, who sought expanded executive powers through the controversial Article 210. Recent constitutional updates were approved in October 2024 under the administration of President Luis Abinader.
