Dominican Republic Ministry of Interior announces firearm license grace period

The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Interior and Police has announced an economic grace period for the renewal and regularization of firearm possession and carry licenses. Under Resolution No. MIP-RR-0007-2026, a payment scale will be applied based on how long the licenses have been expired.

The program is scheduled to run from October 6, 2026, through January 29, 2027. This extraordinary measure aims to strengthen the control of firearms among the civilian population and facilitate compliance with Law No. 631-16, which regulates weapons, ammunition, and related materials.

According to the Ministry, these regulations are intended to ensure public safety, prevent the misuse of firearms, and combat illicit trafficking. The institution also noted that under current law, the expiration or suspension of a license requires the holder to immediately surrender the weapon through transfer, consignment, delivery for custody, or destruction.
