Dominican Republic Ministry of Labor mandates 30-day compliance for lottery shops

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Labor has granted lottery and betting shop owners a 30-day period to bring their establishments into compliance with labor laws, occupational health and safety standards, and social security obligations. Signed by Minister Eddy Olivares Ortega, the directive aims to improve working conditions for approximately 200,000 employees across more than 110,000 locations, a workforce that is almost entirely female.

The Ministry expressed particular concern regarding small booths that lack basic sanitary facilities, ventilation, lighting, and potable water, despite employees working long shifts in these spaces. During this 30-day window, the Ministry will provide guidance for voluntary adjustment, though it will continue to intervene immediately if immediate health or safety risks are detected.

Following the grace period, the government will launch massive nationwide inspections to verify compliance. Inspectors will check for ergonomic seating, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, minimum wage payments, legal working hours, and social security affiliation. The Ministry emphasized that the small size or informal status of a business does not exempt owners from their legal responsibilities to protect worker dignity and safety.
