Dominican Republic labor ministry sanctions 101 Chinese-owned businesses

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Labor has conducted an eight-day inspection of 101 commercial establishments owned by Chinese investors across the National District, Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís, and Higüey. The operations resulted in 1,016 official records of violations, leading to the immediate suspension of activities at 24 businesses due to imminent safety risks for workers.

Key labor violations identified include the practice of terminating employees before they complete three months of service to avoid paying benefits such as vacations and severance. Other significant infractions involved the failure to provide mandatory weekly rest, non-payment of bonuses and overtime, and violations of the 80-20 rule regarding the proportion of Dominican versus foreign workers.

Safety inspections revealed hazardous conditions in 53 establishments, including electrical risks, lack of ventilation, absence of fire extinguishers, and inadequate sanitary facilities. Minister Eddy Olivares Ortega emphasized that labor laws must be respected by all companies regardless of the owners' nationality.
