Dominican Republic modernizes electrical grid for renewable energy
The Dominican Electricity Transmission Company (ETED) is accelerating infrastructure modernization to accommodate the rise of renewable energy and shifting global market demands. During the XI Energy Week of OLACDE, ETED Executive Vice President Alfonso Rodríguez Tejada stated that increasing grid flexibility and resilience is the primary operational challenge due to a more diversified energy matrix.
To manage the variability of solar and wind sources, ETED is implementing smart grids, predictive artificial intelligence models, and energy storage systems. The company has also introduced a training simulator for operators and utilizes mathematical models at its Energy Control Center to integrate higher proportions of renewable generation despite low hydroelectric participation.
On a regional level, the Dominican government is working to consolidate ‘Proyecto Hostos,’ an initiative aimed at establishing a submarine cable to interconnect the energy grids of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico within an estimated five-year timeframe.
