Dominican Republic motorcycle licensing reaches only 1.5%

Authorities in the Dominican Republic report a massive gap in motorcycle regulation, with only approximately 1.5% of the country's motorcycles currently having licensed operators. Out of roughly 6.6 million registered vehicles in the nation, motorcycles account for more than half, totaling about 3.7 million units.

Data from the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant) indicates that as of March 2026, there were 29,592 category 1 motorcycle licenses. While the institution reported thousands of new licenses and renewals between March and September, the total number of motorcycle licenses remains a tiny fraction of the total motorcycle fleet.

In response to the high levels of informality, Intrant is collaborating with the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGII), the Ministry of Interior and Police, and the Joint Task Force to implement a regularization plan. This initiative aims to address the lack of legal identification and plates, as many motorcycles currently circulate without proper documentation or with irregularly manufactured plates.
