Dominican Republic music evolves through traditional tributes and alternative fusion
The Dominican Republic's musical landscape is seeing both a preservation of traditional rhythms and the rise of experimental sounds. Cultural manager Charlie Núñez has launched “Vivir para siempre,” a musical project and tribute designed to honor living legends of merengue. The initiative aims to provide institutional recognition and celebrate the genre's golden era while the artists are still active, rather than waiting for their passing.
Parallel to these traditional tributes, a growing alternative music scene is emerging in the country. This movement blends mainstream genres like merengue, bachata, and dembow with rock, jazz, and electronic music, alongside folkloric elements such as palos and gagá. Artists including Letón Pé, Martox, and Gran Poder de Diosa are noted for creating unique sonic identities that move beyond commercial formulas to redefine Dominican musical expression.
