Dominican Republic parties advance internal party reforms and penal code amendment

Eugenio Cedeño, a deputy of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM), urged party leaders and members to emerge "more united than ever" from the party’s 23rd Extraordinary National Convention. He presented a reform package that would expand the National Executive Committee from 50 to 65 members, establish a clear succession order for the party presidency, and mandate that the 2028‑2032 leadership be elected by universal, direct, secret vote of the membership.

In a separate initiative, PRSC deputy Rogelio Alfonso Genao Lanza filed a bill to modify the newly enacted Dominican Penal Code. The proposal seeks to delete articles criminalising "ultraje" against public officials, replace prison sentences for defamation and injury with fines and civil restitution, protect journalists and peaceful protesters, and limit criminal liability of physicians to cases of proven gross negligence, shielding them from sanctions for systemic health‑system shortcomings.
